About the Old Boys Cup

The Old Boys Cup competition was founded in the season 1913-14 due to the fact that in 1913 the Arthur Dunn Cup committee was faced with the problem of having received numerous applications over and above those from the clubs already in the competition.

It was decided that invitations for 1913-14 should only be issued to those clubs who had competed in the previous season. At the same time, it was further decided to inaugurate a new competition on the same lines as the Arthur Dunn to be known as the Old Boys Cup.

The Arthur Dunn Cup committee continued to control and manage the Old Boys Cup from then until 1926 when the Football Association drew attention to one of their rules which stipulated that it was only permissible for a competition to promote and manage a second competition if the latter is restricted to members of the promoting competition (in this case the ADC).

It was therefore necessary that the Old Boys Cup should have an independent constitution, and in consequence the present competition came into being and held its first meeting on 10 June 1927.

The Junior Cup was inaugurated for the 1951-52 season, the Minor Cup for 1953-54, the 4th XI Cup for 1963-64, the 5th XI Cup for 1965-66, the 6th XI Cup for 1980-81 and the 7th XI Cup for 1985-86. The Veterans' Cup, played on Sundays, began in 1973-74.
